DescriptionLetterform (2017) is a series of A.I.-generated letters that explore the limits of written language systems to the point where they break down beyond the compromised inherited structures of computation. Each form was generated with a recurrent neural network (Google’s Sketch RNN model) trained with an input of a database of written world alphabet letters, mainly Indigenous and non-Western, to produce new letters as memorials of what is lost, mediated by programmed code languages, then coded into machine intelligence. The forms contain hundreds of artifacts from tracing alphabet letters as vector points, to stroke-based drawings as “handwriting,” training the computer to remember languages other than Roman English, over one million times, with intelligence to generate new letterforms. The A.I. model generates new letterforms, understanding each vector point as a squiggle, creating emergent and disobedient forms open for intepretation.
