Frontiers Talk: Firmness, Commodity, and Delight: A Vitruvian Model for Designing and Developing XR
DescriptionNear the end of the first century, Roman architect Vitruvius identified three essential elements for a well-designed building: firmitas, utilitas, and venustas (translated as firmness, commodity, and delight). These guiding principles are suitable for not just the built environment but can also serve as a rubric for building great XR experiences. While firmness is addressed through the various backend constraints of producing the XR continent, the utility (also known as a commodity) deals with UX development and XR's comfort concerns. Still, we are left with the concept of “delight.” The nuances of delight stretch far beyond the visual aesthetics and various sensory inputs. Delight reaches into the subtle aspects of XR and explores what people feel and how these experiences can move them emotionally. The future of positive and well-designed XR experiences would well reflect the relationship between these three design aspects. This talk organized by ACM SIGGRAPH Design Committee.
