DescriptionIn Japan, the reluctance of young people to donate blood has become a social issue. In this study, for the purpose of deterring the trend among young people not to donate blood, we propose a virtual reality (VR) application that changes blood donation into a positive experience by gradually changing the appearance of an avatar from a normal state to a state full of energy according to the elapsed time of blood donation. As a result of a comparison experiment between the proposed method to change blood donation into a positive experience and a method to distract attention by stimulation, it was clarified that the pain of blood donation was significantly alleviated through the proposed method.

DescriptionThis submission proposes a physically inspired appearance modelling and rendering approach for rendering of cobwebs that maintains the optical properties of real-life spider webs while being simpler than existing methods, employing off-the-shelf visual effects production tools. Existing methods tend to require the use of non-standard software, such as wave-based rendering systems. Our approach avoids these restrictions by instead focussing on the development of an iridescent shader, suitable for deployment in common production renderers, that emulates the properties of spider silk.

However, the industry has shifted towards computer-generated animation, leading to a decline in traditional, hand-drawn animation. There is a unique opportunity for computational innovation with a novel approach to revitalizing traditional animation by focusing on its creative methods and production. Before implementing current computational techniques, we must start putting ourselves into the minds of imaginative animators to realize these techniques. Only then can we develop new tools designed to empower these artists, not ones designed to supplant them.

Description" Data Weaving" connects digital language and cultural language, developing sound waves of real-time visual programming. It transcodes sound data of local narratives into woven visual patterns, becoming a touchable textile embedded with body artistries and generating local narratives in cross-cultural sound preservations of digital materials. The textiles of " Data Weaving" are stored, arranged, and indexed individual messages in a meaning materialized way, and become a trace of the producers' body marks, as well as a way of interaction in which personal language is memorized and cultural textiles are mutually mended.

In "A Vocal Landscape" the creators aim to craft a VR experience that feels familiar and relatable both visually and narratively. Their minimalistic storytelling approach focuses on the niche yet complex subject of human communication, avoiding grand theatrical dialogues or world-saving plots. Instead, they present a naturalistic, late-night conversation between two people, where each person's associations arise from what is said and heard. This simple structure allows for the integration of fantastical visual storytelling and sound design that reveal the deeper resonance of words in our minds, shaped by personal backgrounds. By making the experience akin to photographic cinema, they aim to ensure that the audience can easily connect with the characters and storyline, minimizing the challenges of VR immersion.

DescriptionThe ACM SIGGRAPH Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee is excited to present a gathering focused on an ongoing project that combines animation, artificial intelligence, and advocacy to address concerns surrounding LGBTQIA+ discrimination in the workplace. This event will provide a space for discussions, tools, and skill building designed to foster support for LGBTQIA+ individuals within the professional communities of computer graphics and interactive techniques.
The event will feature a speaker as well as an interactive simulation, the subject of a recent publication exploring the use of generative AI paired with character animation and motion capture to support LGBTQIA+ advocacy. Participants engage with virtual characters in scenarios that reflect real-world challenges faced by LGBTQIA+ individuals, particularly focusing on the dynamics of coming out at work.
The session will highlight the crucial role of AI in bridging gaps between an individual’s professional and personal life in ways that are designed to foster inclusivity and acceptance in the workplace. We will also discuss the historical contributions of queer individuals to AI and computing, from Alan Turing to contemporary figures, emphasizing the inherent "queerness" in the field.
Professional hurdles facing LGBTQIA+ individuals will be addressed and engaged in an open conversation facilitated by the speaker and members of SIGGRAPH’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee. This event aims to equip attendees- both LGBTQIA+ and allies (and all) with the tools and insights needed to advocate effectively for LGBTQIA+ individuals, promoting a more inclusive and supportive workplace throughout all areas of the computer graphics industry.

Description"Algorithmic Amplification" leverages large language models to create a tangible representation of digital echo chambers, highlighting how language shapes perceptions and reinforces beliefs. It examines AI's effect on language and culture, revealing a paradox: while LLMs are a major AI advancement, they can also amplify societal biases. Participants insert their upper body into an enclosure and express an opinion. Autonomous agents validate and reinforce this opinion, simulating a social media echo chamber. Much like online discussions, as time goes by the arguments degenerate, become more extreme, more absolute, all without guidance.

Floraine Berthouzoz started this event as an informal gathering. After her passing in 2015, Floraine’s mentees and colleagues built upon her efforts to create an event that aims to broaden the network of women researchers and provide a friendly and personal environment where graduate students can interact with senior researchers. We will be hosting a panel of women in graphics who will share with us some of their research experiences. The event is open to all researchers, regardless of gender.

DescriptionWe provide closed-form expressions for biharmonic coordinates for triangular cages in 3D, as well as for their gradients and Hessians. We demonstrate new cage-based deformations, a novel subspace for variational cage-based modeling, and we establish closed-form expressions for Somigliana coordinates in 3D that are linked to our coordinates.
